| The new musical by Right Lines
Productions, "Whisky Kisses" (book and lyrics Euan
Martin & Dave Smith, music by J Bryce) has justified
its success in the Highland Quest competition*.
In November, the revised first act
with music was given a rehearsed reading in the Drama na
h-Alba Festival in Inverness.
In early January 2008, we were
invited to perform a short extract of Whisky Kisses at
the H2007 end of Year of Highland Culture celebration at
Eden Court. Despite competition with a free bar and
sumptuous buffet, we still managed to pull in good
audiences to our two presentations in La Scala, one of
the new cinema venues. The response was overwhelmingly
positive and the event was a great success in terms of
keeping the show in the public eye.
In February, we will develop
Whisky Kisses during a workshop week with Andrew Panton
and the students on the Musical Theatre course at RSAMD
in Glasgow. We have a general plan to raise funding to
put together a production of Whisky Kisses in 2009
autumn.
Last year, we received a small
grant from Moray Council whch allowed us to hold
development workshops and helped fund the read-through
at the Drama Na h-Alba Festival. We are also
seeking funding / sponsorship, so any interested parties
should contact James, who will then consult with his
co-writers.
*Highland Quest was an international
competition to find a new Scottish musical, sponsored by
Eden Court Theatre, The Cameron Mackintosh Foundation
and The Scottish Government.
Glasgow Herald 10 Jul 2006
"The judges did not say so, but the suspicion is that it
came down to a head-to-head with Whisky Kisses, a
sharply scripted comedy about two collectors vying for a
rare bottle of whisky by the Highland-based team of Euan
Martin, Dave Smith and James Bryce. .... which got an
enthusiastic response from the audience."
Hi Arts 10 Jul 2006
"The revelation was Bryce's music, with an opening,
through-composed, sequence set in New York which was
...complex and many-stranded ..., and a closing solo
which, in Alyth McCormack's radiant singing, was the
single most memorable and beautiful moment of the whole
evening."
Inverness Courier 11 Jul 2006
"The hilariously sharp script and mock Broadway numbers
were so good that I suspect it will also find a route
into production." |
